Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Dar es Salaam

Arrival at the Nyerere International Airport and meet and greet by your English speaking driver guide. Transfer to the commercial capital of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam. Welcome-drink and check-in at Swiss Garden Lodge.

Day 2: Selous Game Reserve

We depart at 06h30 in the morning to travel the scenic coastal road to Selous Game Reserve. Along the way we visit local fruits market, farmlands and Kibiti primary school. Thereafter we wind our way down the escarpment to the Mloka village where we overnight for two nights in our well appointed Selous Sunset Lodge overlooking the Rufiji River.

We arrive at the camp during afternoon, and then we conduct an afternoon boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River, where you can watch plenty of hippos, crocodiles, and bird life is prolific. This evening we enjoy a hearty bush “braai” and again fall asleep to the sounds of the wild.

Day 3 - 4: Selous Game Reserve

We start the day with customary coffee and rusks, before setting off on a two full day game viewing in Selous Game Reserve, Africa's largest wildlife sanctuary, with an area of 54.600kms. Selous is bigger than Denmark and 4 times the size of Serengeti. It has the world's largest number of big game - elephant, buffalo, and rhino. It also contains wildebeest, eland, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, impala, hippo, leopard and lion. There are about 350 species of bird life.

Day 5: Mbuyuni Farm

An early start and another extensive drive in search of the “Big Five” and variety of other animals that inhabit the Reserve, we exit and head for the sleepy settlement of Ulugulu. Our next stop is the Mbuyuni farm, a spectacular lodge built on stilts in subtropical indigenous forest right on the Ulugulu Mountains and offering farm activities and mountain hiking, bird hide and lovely village walks.

Day 6: Mbuyuni Farm Retreat – Kilombero Valley

Wake up to watch the sunrise over the Ulugulu Mountains, an amazing sight from a natural viewing platform amongst the lodge balcony. After breakfast drive back to the vehicle and then transfer to the Kilombero Valley. After lunch in any designated post around Kilombero Valley you will continue to a remote fishing village where you will spend 1 night. Elephants often walk right through the village, especially at night. You have the option of enjoying superb canoe safaris on the Kilombero River

Day 7: Udzungwa Mountain National Park

In the mornings the fishermen bring in their catch, and the banks of the river in front of the village come alive with activity as the fish are sorted. You can observe and even choose your own fish for lunch! There will be a village tour. No trip to Kilombero is complete without a visit to the local village bar!

Transfer from Kilombero Valley off towards Udzungwa Mountain National Park. Walking safari to Sanje Waterfalls (looking for endemic primates enroute), where you can swim in plunge-pools and camp at the top of a 180m waterfall if you want. The hike is short (2hrs) but quite steep in places. Explore the forests and waterfalls, and visit site of the endemic African Violets.

Day 8: Mikumi National Park

A reasonably average drive today, but well rested, we pass through the scenic escarpment of Udzungwa Mountains, dotted with rural villages where women work in the fields and men tend their cows as they have for centuries. Our journey then takes us through the abundant wildlife of Mikumi National Park till sundown before check – in at the lodge.

Day 9: Mikumi National Park

The day we spend exploring the flood plains of Mikumi National Park and wildlife. Wildlife is abundant. Sunrise is normally around 06:35am in the park. We wake up with the wildlife and return to camp at 12:30pm for lunch, we take a short refreshing break up to 14:30pm. We rest until the sun is less intense and start our late afternoon game drive at 15:00pm. Now the animals are more active and we spend our evening doing a sunset drive. We return to the lodge at 18:00 pm for dinner and overnight at the Lodge.

Day 10: Bagamoyo Slavery Port

A reasonably long drive today, but well rested, we pass through the scenic escarpment of Chalinze, dotted with rural villages where women work in the fields and men tend their cows as they have for centuries. Our journey then takes us past the many archaeological sites of Bagamoyo Slavery Port before we check – in at Bomani Bungalows.

Day 11: Bagamoyo Slavery Port

07:00hrs depart from Bomani Bungalows, visit the Kaole Ruins, ruins of the Shirazai trade town (13th – 17th century), Old Ferry on the mighty Rufiji River. Then visit the crocodile farm, where crocodiles are kept before being shipped abroad. Lunch will be served at any restaurant in town. After our lunch, visit the historical sites including the Caravan Serai, an old terminus of the caravans coming from the interior to the shore of the Indian Ocean; the Catholic Church, started in 1868 with the Livingstone power where Livingstone rested for one night before his body was shipped to Zanzibar; cemeteries; German building such as Old Boma and the Customs House.

Day 12: Bomani Beach Front

It is a leisure day on the front beach till sundown!

Day 13: Dar es Salaam

In the morning you will be at leisure on the front beach. Lunch at Bomani Beach Bungalows and later afternoon will drive back to the Dar es Salaam and we arrive at City Garden Restaurant in the early evening. Tonight we will eat our farewell dinner and drink the farewell toasts to your adventure then you are transferred to the airport for your onwards travel arrangements.
